Elizabeth Kuti has a Ph. D. from Trinity College, Dublin; an MA in Text and Performance from King’s College London/ RADA, and a first degree in English from Balliol College, Oxford. She worked as an actress in Dublin, where roles included the Colleen Bawn in The Colleen Bawn (Abbey and NT); Stella in Streetcar (Corn Exchange); Olivia in Twelfth Night (Lyric Theatre, Belfast); Cathy in Melonfarmer (Peacock at the Abbey Theatre); the Duchess in The Duchess of Malfi (Loose Canon); Maria in The School for Scandal (Rough Magic). As a playwright, her writing for the stage includes Treehouses which was produced at the Peacock (Abbey Theatre, Dublin) in 2000; and subsequently at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter. It won second prize in the Susan Smith Blackburn Awards for the year 2000 and the BBC Radio Drama prize in the Stewart Parker Awards 2000. Other plays for theatre include The Whisperers (a completed version of Frances Sheridan’s unfinished 18th century comedy, A Trip to Bath) which toured Ireland and played at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe, 1999; and The Sugar Wife (also for Rough Magic Theatre Company, Project Arts Centre, Dublin 2005; Soho Theatre, London 2006). The Sugar Wife was joint winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Award 2005-6 and was nominated for Best New Play in the Irish Times Theatre Awards, 2005-6. Elizabeth’s plays for radio include a dramatized adaptation of Addison and Steele’s Spectator, Dear Mr Spectator (Drama serial, Woman’s Hour, Radio 4); May Child (starring Patricia Routledge) and The Glasswright, both Afternoon Plays for Radio 4; and for Radio 3 Mr Fielding’s Scandal-Shop (Drama on 3, Christmas Day 2005). Elizabeth worked at the Royal National Theatre Studio, on attachment as a writer in Spring 2007, and wrote The Six-Days World (Finborough Theatre, London, December 2007). She is currently under commission for a new play at the Royal National Theatre, and to BBC Drama for a new series of Dear Mr Spectator . She has written short plays for The Miniaturists (Southwark and Arcola Theatres) including Time Spent on Trains which toured to the Latitude Festival. She is a lecturer in drama at the University of Essex and is married to the actor and voice coach Robert Price, with whom she has two children.
